Close-up View

60" x 47-1/2"

This quilt was born out of anger and hurt feelings, unlike "Kissing Joy", the first quilt in the poppy series (to right). I wanted this piece to be loud and red! As an artist I am fortunate to be able to turn negativity into beauty.

Fusible applique. All fabrics hand-dyed by artist.

Kissing Joy, 2009

Close-up View

35" x 43-1/2"

Juried into the National Juried Show, Canadian Quilters' Association, Saskatoon, 2009.

In his poem "Eternity", William Blake implores us to "kiss joy as it flies". For two years I have attempted to capture the perfect photo of poppies in my garden. As the sun comes out after a cloudy day in June, I seize the opportunity to "kiss joy", however fleeting, before it flies. Poppies are one of the most delicate and ephemeral of all the flowers in the garden.

Fusible applique. All fabrics hand-dyed by artist.

Queen of the Night, 2008

"Queen of the Night" is a tulip hybrid that is characterized by its deep shade of purple. Purple is also a colour associated with passion, and the dark velvety centre might represent the heart of passion The term "Queen of the Night" conjures up images of mystery and intrigue.

Fusible applique, heavily free-motion machine quilted. Fabrics hand-dyed by artist and commercial batiks.

Luscious, 2008

Close-up View

42" x 36"

Not for Sale at this time

All the feelings and images that the word "luscious" evokes are aroused by this lily. Richly satisfying and highly pleasing to the senses, the lily is voluptuous, provocative and sensual. It begins as a small bulb. It flourishes and grows full-bodied and abundant. Plush in appearance, velvety to the touch, and scented to entice us, the lily captivates and seduces.

Fusible applique, heavily free-motion machine quilted. Fabrics hand-dyed by artist and commercial batiks.

Smitten, 2007

Close-up View

26" x 23-1/2"

Not for sale at this time

"Smitten" is inspired by a close-up photo of a wild rose I took at the University of British Columbia Botanical Gardens in the Summer of 2006. The title is chosen because of the close association between roses and sexual attraction. "Smitten" is also a good word to describe the sudden attraction the artist feels to various visual stimuli.

Fusible applique, Prismacolour artist pencil, heavily free-motion machine quilted. Fabrics hand-dyed by artist and commercial batiks.

I have been taking photographs and collecting pictures of sunflowers over a period of two years in an effort to study their structure and equip myself to better represent them in my quilts. In preparation for making this quilt, I dyed many meters of fabric for the sunflower petals, centres and leaves, and then chose areas of those fabrics that I felt would best represent my vision. This is the second in a serious of sunflower quilts.

Pieced log-cabin background using commercial batiks. Sunflowers and leaves use fabric hand-dyed by the artist. Raw-edge applique (this technique uses fabric the way a painter uses paint). Tsukineko inks. Free-motion machine quilted.

This version has more light and depth. Colourwash background, lilypads and flower petals hand-dyed by artist. Dragonfly threadpainted on stabilizer in a hoop. Free-motion machine quilted.

Poppies, 2006

Close-up view

29" x 25-1/2"

Not for Sale at this time

This quilt was inspired by my obsession with the side-view of a poppy. I love the look of depth resulting from the contrast in values between the front and back portions. I was also looking for more ideas for my Fast & Fun Fused Designs class, and found this an easy flower to cut free-hand using a scissors, rotary blade and wave blade. The gradation of scarlett fabrics were dyed just for this project.

Fusible applique, free-hand cut poppies, yarn embellishment. All fabrics hand-dyed by artist. Free-motion quilted.

Close-up View

Private Collection

All hand-dyed fabrics by artist, fusible applique, dragonfly threadpainted in a hoop on water soluble stabilizer.

I collected and studied pictures of coneflowers over a period of months. When it came time to create a Christmas present for my sister that would match her house, I felt knowledgable enough about coneflowers to cut the petals and centres free-hand after applying fusible to the reverse side.

Dreaming of Spring, 2006

Close-up view

25" x 21"

$650

This quilt is the result of a play session with my multi-coloured hand-dyes. I was inspired by a student who was brave enough to cut free-hand into fabrics she had dyed in my class. I played with the curves until they were pleasing to me, and then decided I couldn't wait for spring anymore and planted some crocuses.

Free-form curves, raw-edge applique, textile paints.. Petals of crocuses heavily stitched in a hoop before sandwiching the quilt. Faced edge. All fabrics hand-dyed by artist. Free-motion machine quilted.

Tango, 2005

Soleil I, 2004

20" x 20"

Juried into the Ontario Juried Quilt Show, 2005

Not for Sale

Black and white fabrics are commercial fabrics. All other fabrics hand-dyed by artist. Raw-edge applique. Petals were cut free-hand and basted in place with basting glue before being thread-painted. Free-motion machine quilted.

Sunflowers seem like big happy smiles to me. In the Summer of 2004 a variety of sunflowers grew along the fence in my backyard. Many of them had sprouted from birdseed that had dropped to the ground over the winter. I took numerous photographs and over many months studied the flowers carefully to understand their structure: how the leaves curl, and how the petals overlap. This is the first in a series of sunflower quilts I have planned.
